How to Reset Furnace After Power Outage

Because the Merts Heating & Air Conditioning family of customers are our top priority, we offer helpful tips to ensure you stay warm and cozy especially during the frigid cold of our Crown Point, Indiana and Steger, Illinois winters. When it’s freezing outside, your comfort, health and safety are our chief concerns.

During winter storms, there’s always a high possibility of a power outage. Tree limbs heavy with ice often fall on power lines, often causing widespread losses of electricity for many residents in our service area.

A FURNACE RESET IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3

Before turning any switches off and back on, once the power is restored, you should first check the thermostat to be sure everything looks normal. Lack of electricity can cause some digital appliances to malfunction.

While your model of furnace may require a slightly different approach, the basics of resetting your furnace are as follows:

  1. Check your owner’s manual for the location of your unit’s power switch. (It’s usually near the blower compartment.) Once you locate it, turn it off. If you cannot find a switch, simply turn off the circuit breaker that controls the furnace.
  2. Once the furnace is off, wait approximately 10 – 30 seconds.
  3. Turn the power switch or circuit breaker back on. Check the furnace to see if it’s running properly.

With any power outage or other circumstance that requires you to reset your furnace, it’s usually safer to err on the side of caution and have your unit checked by a professional. Merts Heating & Air Conditioning has trained technicians available 24/7 to provide peace of mind that your furnace is operating safely and efficiently.

If your furnace frequently needs to be reset, why not consider a permanent solution such as a whole-house generator?
